Nickel-Zinc (NiZn) Batteries Vs Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd) Batteries

Nickel-Zinc Batteries are chemically very similar to nickel-cadmium. Both use an alkaline electrolyte and a nickel electrode but differ significantly in their voltage. Zinc electrode kinetics are faster than Cadmium. Zinc conductivity is 15% higher than Cadmium. High negative zinc potential allows use of high conductivity copper current collector. Zinc passivation is not a problem. Nickel-Zinc Batteries are a high performance and low-cost alternative to the Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries. Nickel-Zinc (NiZn) Batteries Vs Lithium-ion (Li-ion) Batteries

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) Batteries have high energy density but Nickel-Zinc (NiZn) Batteries have high-discharge power density. NiZn Batteries are better performing low-cost alternative to Li-ion batteries in high-discharge applications such as photography flashlights, digital cameras, hybrid electric vehicles, etc. The cost advantage of NiZn is durable, based on the lower material costs of its constituent elements, includingcommodity metals in abundant supply and easily recyclable materials. In addition, the materials used in NiZn batteries are non-combustible and inherently safe — resulting in less expensive manufacturing processes, simpler pack integration and less complex and expensive safety/power control systems.

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) Battery‘s high energy density makes it well suited for plug-in electric vehicles (PHEVs) and electric vehicles (EVs), which require large amounts of stored energy to travel long distances between charges. However, Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) require a different type of battery – one with high power density, or the ability to charge and discharge large amounts of power quickly. Li-ion high-power batteries for HEVs are significantly more expensive than high-energy batteries for EVs. NiZn Battery is an inherently high-power chemistry and can provide equal or greater power (W/kg) at half the cost of Li-ion HEV batteries.
