Atmel, a leader in microcontroller and touch technology solutions, announced it has achieved the touch controller market’s longest proximity sensing range of over 10 inches (25cm) with the QTouch AT42QT2120 Capacitive Touch Controller. A longer sensing range enables a system to wake up as an object or finger approaches the system. The system then turns on the backlight or boots up when touch operation commences. The Atmel QT2120 Capacitive Touch Controller is ideal for applications in automotive, computing, consumer, industrial, medical and white and brown goods requiring proximity capability.

QTouch Capacitive Touch Controller with Longer Proximity Sensing RangeAtmel AT42QT2120 Capacitive Touch Controller has 12 configurable Atmel QTouchADC buttons, sliders and wheels. The QTouchADC sensing algorithm (self capacitance) enables the user to achieve longer-range proximity sensing. This capability makes the device ideal for any type of proximity-sensing application, including wake-up, thermostat, TV controls, wireless mouse, etc. This reduces the total power consumption of your device and results in a more intuitive and differentiated user interface.

The button sensors can be constructed in a variety of shapes and sizes. The device includes all the necessary signal processing functions required to provide stable sensing under a wide variety of changing conditions and frequencies (conducted immunity certified to EN61000-4-6 Level 2B).

The QTouchADC sensing algorithm enables superior sensing because of faster acquisition times and shorter burst lengths. This algorithm is utilized in the new Atmel AT42QT2120 touch controller, as well in the Atmel QTouch Library in the Atmel ATtiny20 and ATtiny40 devices. In addition to providing the industry’s best proximity range, QTouchADC removes the need for any external components per sensing channel and reduces the pins to 1-pin-per-channel.
