Many people choose metal detection as their hobby projects, because they can find gold chains, gold coin, gold nuggets, and other precious metals by using a simple low cost metal detector system in their free time. Several specialized metal detectors can discriminate between different kind of metals like gold, silver or other precious metals. In this way you have the possibility to recover long time buried treasures and find precious ancient targets laying underground. Industrial metal detectors are used in the pharmaceutical, food, beverage, textile, garment, plastics, chemicals, lumber, and packaging industries.

The operation of metal detectors is based upon the principles of electromagnetic induction. Metal detectors contain one or more inductor coils that are used to interact with metallic elements on the ground. When the magnetic field of the coil moves across metal, the field induces electric currents (called eddy currents) in the metal (mine or treasure). The eddy currents induce their own magnetic field, which generates an opposite current in the coil, which induces a signal indicating the presence of metal.

Metal Detector Types & Applications

  • Security screening metal detectors – Metal detectors are used for security screening of passengers in airports.
  • Industrial metal detectors are used in the pharmaceutical, food, beverage, textile, garment, plastics, chemicals, lumber, and packaging industries. Contamination of food by metal shards from broken processing machinery during the manufacturng process is a major safety issue in the food industry.
  • In civil engineering special metal detectors (cover meters) are used to locate rebar. Rebar detectors are less sophisticated, and can only locate metallic objects below the surface.
  • Treasure Hunting (Prospecting) is looking for valuable metals like gold and silver in their natural forms, such as nuggets or flakes.

Metal Detecting for Gold Nuggets (Gold Treasure Hunting)

Metal Detector for Detecting Gold and Precious MetalsMetal detecting for gold nuggets is the gold mining equivalent of big game hunting. Today’s machines can detect gold as small as a half a grain with ease. Metal detectors will not normally find buried accumulations of fine gold directly. A metal detector’s greatest advantage is that it needs no water, a near-universal requirement for most methods of placer sampling. They visualize the hidden objects deep under the ground surface in graphical 3d representations where you can determine the position, size and depth of buried objects.
