STMicroelectronics recently announced the addition of a
6-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) to its family of ultra-low-power MEMS
sensors for industrial applications. The high-accuracy IMU provides high
measurement resolution and smart energy-saving features for longer-lasting
battery-powered industrial devices.

Featuring a
3-axis accelerometer with a selectable full scale of ±2/±4/±8/±16 g and a
3-axis gyroscope with a selectable full scale of ±125/±250/±500/±1,000/±2,000
dps, the ISM330DLC is suited for robots,
drones, platform stabilizers, and industrial IoT systems.

The new IMU
consumes 0.5 mA of current in normal condition mode and 0.75 mA in
high-performance mode while featuring a large integrated FIFO (up to 4 kB) that
allows for efficient data retrieval by the host system. Energy savings are further enabled by smart
features and interrupts such as free-fall, wakeup, click and double-click,
6D/4D orientation, and tilt detection.

The
ISM330DLC also provides developers with a sensor-hub feature to efficiently
collect data from external sensors as well as a temperature sensor and
self-test capability for both the gyroscope and accelerometer.

Other key industrial-grade
features include filtering to ensure closed-loop control stability, a dedicated
configurable low-latency signal-processing path, and low noise. The signal path
can be configured to make gyroscope or accelerometer data accessible through an
auxiliary SPI interface. The
accelerometer provides bandwidth of up to 3 kHz, making the ISM330DLC a good
fit for vibration-monitoring and compensation systems.

The ISM330DLC
is available in a 2.5 × 3 × 0.83-mm plastic LGA system-in-package and is
covered by STMicroelectronics’ 10-year longevity program. Pricing begins at $2.90 for orders of 1,000
pieces.
